According to a CNA report, the government will soon introduce more initiatives to help students improve their English. Some of these initiatives include an English language Institute to train English language teachers and an oracy portal which has a suite of applications for students to practice their oral skills. Is Singlish to blame for many Singaporeans’ poor command of proper English? Will banning Singlish in schools lead to better spoken English amongst Singaporeans? Have you been to Singapore? What do you think about their English? @Roberta: It used to be better in the past than now? Well English is their National Language, it’s supposed to be better than other Asian countries whose national language is non-English.
I’m a third generation Singaporean Chinese, which also makes me an overseas chinese however I can’t write or read chinese, and hardly speak any chinese. I’ve lived my entire life speaking English. If some terrible disaster happened in China and millions die, I seriously would’nt even care. I’m a Chinese Singaporean and I suck in Chinese, however I’m really good in English. Since like 7, I’ve changed Chinese tutors about 5 or 6 times and my Chinese was just as lousy! I find it hard to read sentences fluently although i speak Chinese often and my vocabulary is horrendous. Does anyone know any techniques to improve quickly (I’m having exams really soon)? I need help!!!
